Week 6 - Shaw Corporate meeting

Web/phone discussion of Professional Development progress delivering Google Sheets instruction. So far, both Miles and Doug are happy with the progress. They agreed to begin looking at delivering the instruction live. So far, they believe the instruction may work with an on-boarding session, but we will see if there is interest as a standalone session. Since the meeting was done as a call, there are no images associated with the discussion this time. We did go over the progression of training and the duration of each point of instruction. We talked about the importance of evaluation and how to implement it. We also spoke about how much of the live instruction might be incorporated into the desired hosted instruction, what the live instruction will indicate about the deficiencies in the instruction, location considerations, as well as the participants (to a degree). We agreed to record the online instruction as .mp4 using Camtasia, and edited (finalized) with Adobe Final Cut. This i...

Week 6-DSC_Digital_Citizenship_discussion

Image
Meeting with my Instructional Technologist at DSC to discuss our collaboration on Digital Citizenship, I presented what I had from looking at social networking. We worked in the Roberts Library and talked about the growth plans there. We also agreed that our project will examine and instruct on copyright and Intellectual property laws, how much instructors can use in instruction, the rules associated with using other people's content, and how to protect that information. We have a direction and a plan.

Week 6 - more builds

The hardware was the easy part. With the 1st PC built up, I could begin to take down the PC's the factory currently use. With that order, the pressure is up a bit. There is always the chance that problems will arise and delay all progress. The first production PC proved to give such a problem. After blowing out a couple of pounds of dust, the first replacement motherboard would not allow us to use the memory configuration of the original board. fortunately, the Dell PC was easy enough to get parts for. We found and ordered a 64 bit board that did fit and allowed use of the memory configuration as well as providing ample connections for all of the other hardware including the new drive.  Hard disk drive  Memory cards 64 bit motherboard showing processor expansion slot and heavy duty cooling apparatus for processors and video cards. Solid State Drive Plenty of room- expansion slots Upon reassembly, the PC did not want to boot up, forcing me to go back into t...

Week 5 - Hardware in

Today, February 14 (Happy Valentines!), the hardware came in for the computer upgrades at Tricycle. Aernout (site Supervisor) tasked me with inspecting the parts and planning the order of updates. The new solid state drives were all good, and the factory was too busy to interrupt with taking one of their machines offline. I agreed with Mr. Hetem and Susan Hines (Factory Manager) that we would build a computer, install all of the needed software, do set up and system tests, prior to taking a factory machine offline. All of the factory machines are desktop computers. We took a desktop machine from storage and checked it to make sure that it would boot up - which it did. The machine had Windows 7 installed. I disassembled the machine and checked memory and processor speeds. Mr. Hetem decided that the machine would perform much better with a new motherboard with a faster processor which he ordered. He also ordered 16 GB of memory for the new motherboard. I checked the status of the 3rd pa...

Murphy must be at the controls and reading from his rule book. I was appointed for jury duty which I hoped would be postponed, called off, or dismissed. Of course that would not happen this week because I had a Monday appointment to complete my face-to-face interview and department tour with what I hoped would be my #1 offsite contact. I spent all of Monday - 9AM to 4PM - and half of my Tuesday at the courthouse. Monday  was spent being selected, questioned, and appointed to a jury. Tuesday, the jury I was appointed to agreed to let our defendant spend the next several months incarcerated.  On the bright side, my offsite contact rescheduled for next Tuesday, the 11th. I have been working on the staff training project, Google Sheets, and will have the outline and objectives by the due date. I am learning that Google Sheets is very powerful and will do more than I think (hope) I will ever need a spreadsheet to do. My Professional Development project will target entry level us...

Face-to-face - Week 4

Planning... In this course, the students are comprised of staff at Tricycle Incorporated. The staff is comprised of the Sim Factory division. The Sim Factory staff uses a very technical piece of Apso software called Sim Center, in conjunction with other standard imaging software, to complete their projects.   There are 5 Sim Factory machines in total. Upon interviewing the CEO/CTO of Tricycle, Mr. Aernout Hetem, we agreed that the Sim Center software needed to be updated. Mr. Hetem also wanted to update part of the hardware that his designers used as well. Mr. Hetem ordered the hardware, and I will begin to update the computers when the hardware arrives. Due to the nature of the hardware updates, the computers will have to be upgraded piece-meal, meaning that each one will have to be completed, tested, and put back into production before starting on the next. The process of updating the hardware and the associated re-configuring the machines and installing all software will ta...

Week 3

Image
In week three, I finally started making some progress. I had (email and hangout) contact with the Manager of Learning Content and Technologies for Shaw Industries, Miles Ford, and he had several projects that he needed working on. Since my focus was on staff professional development, I chose a Google Sheets training video project for hourly workers. My intent with this project is to show some of the features available in Google Sheets that are commonly used, such as formulas for monetary budgeting and time studies. I will also advise students to explore the many pre-made templates available, and offer links to other training materials. I was scheduled to have a face-to-face meeting with Mr. Ford and his team on Monday, February 3rd, but my inability to get out of jury duty has cancelled that meeting - yet another missed deadline I suppose. Also in week three, my director, CEO of Tricycle Inc. Aernout Hetem (see photo) agreed in our interview that he needed the computers in the SIM ...
